Life is not a waiting room....... for heaven!

My friend Philip Yancey has used the following analogy many times as we have debated into the wee hours of morning our variant views of politics, religion and life.  At this critical time in America's history this analogy and the Christianity Today article that accompanies it, are something every believer and American needs to hear.  Let me know what you think.

"We find it difficult to maintain a commitment to both this world and the next, to this life and the next.

A friend of mine uses the analogy of a busload of tourists en route to the Grand Canyon. On the long journey across the wheat fields of Kansas and through the glorious mountains of Colorado, the travelers inexplicably keep the shades down. Intent on the ultimate destination, they never even bother to look outside.

As a result, they spend their time arguing over such matters as who has the best seat and who's taking too much time in the bathroom.

The church can resemble such a bus, says my friend. We should remember that the Bible has far more to say about how to live during the journey than about the ultimate destination."  Read the rest!

Super Sheep

My new young friend, Lioness854 recently posted a wonderful animation of one of my points in the message "Super Sheep."  We are just like sheep in that we tend to do whatever the rest of the flock is doing. Very creative and simple.  I loved it.

Recently, for the first time in 5 years I simply went out back, put my cane down, and started walking. I made it 42 yards.

Today I walked 5 miles.

It's not the economy stupid! It's STUPID economics!

It's Watercooler Wednesday and I realize this is supposed to be about art.  Well, economics is more of a science than it is an art.  But if you listen only to the media reports, economics is all melodrama and no science.  There is a huge difference between financial upheaval and economic recession. 

"It is difficult to gage when financial market upheaval will finally come to an end. However, as long as policymakers steer clear of tax hikes, tight money, and protectionism, the economy should remain resilient."  Emphasis is mine.

If SOMEONE raises taxes, creates tight money, and initiates protectionism,  THEN you can be afraid!   VERY AFRAID.  

Pick up thy legs and WALK!

Our country is facing some major problems. There are two basic views of how to solve those problems. One is to tax the wax out of Americans and wait for the government to come to the rescue. The other is to empower people to WALK!

Pace Yourself!

Today while training for a triathlon I did something I haven't done since High School. 

In High School I went out for track and trained to run 800 meters which is about a half a mile.  I trained hard and on the day of the track meet I was ready to go. 

This was a special day because my girlfriend was in the stands.

Okay she didn't know that she was my girlfriend, but I knew and that was all that counted.

Maybe winning this race would make it happen.  The gun went off and I took off like a shot.  After the first turn I was ahead of everybody.  At a quarter mile I just ran out of gas. I tried to keep going but it was impossible. 

My stomach sent a message to my brain. The sandwich I had eaten earlier in the day didn’t want to run with me anymore.  Before I knew it I was kneeling on the infield grass.  The sandwich came up first, followed by a pizza I had eaten a week ago, finally a jar of strained peas I had eaten when I was a baby made an appearance.

Instead of running to finish, I had run to beat all the other runners.  God has not called you to beat anyone.  He has called you to finish.  Pace yourself

Wii will Wii will Rock you!

Last night I played my first game of Wii.  Or should I say, “We played a game of Wii.  It wasn’t a big game.  It was just a wee game of Wii that we played.  I played a video game that allowed me to bowl, play tennis, box, and take part in a variety sports and sweat profusely without leaving my living room.  I bowled with my three year old grand daughter.  Now get this.  You hold this thingee in your hand, pretend to throw a bowling ball and an ugly little guy on the screen rolls the ball as fast as you throw it, in the direction you throw it and knocks down pins just as if you were really bowling. We played ten games. The next day I was so stiff I could hardly move......all from pretending to play a Wii little game......with no real ball and no alley and no pins.  And a three year old beat me.  One last thing.... Watch out for ceiling fans. 

Your children WILL outgrow you!

My Daughter Traci realizes that age has taken it's toll on my size.  Once she was little and I was bigger than life.  Look at me now.

Behind the politics!

I ask you to step lightly over the political overtones in this video clip.  Peek behind the politics to get a glimpse of the loving heart of a man and woman and the miraculous change that their love brought to the lives of two children without hope. Please watch.

As a representative of Compassion International my heart has been softened to the plight of children born into poverty. Behind the politics, I found the best story of the RNC convention so far.

Don't touch that rose!

  It's Watercooler Wednesday. 

Does creative art have any power to reveal truth about God?   God himself, the most creative artist of all, reveals the answer in Romans 1:20 

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

His eternal power???   His divine nature???  

The supreme artist proclaimed that an enormous body of essential truth could be known from observing his art.  This doesn’t excuse us from the responsibility of proclaiming propositional truth in spoken word, but we have no choice but to conclude that creative art has both inspirational and rational power to reveal truth about God. 

If God had not trusted the power of his artistic creation to reveal truth, he would have engraved John 3:16 on the petal of each rose.

If he had, I doubt we would take a picture of it.  According to Romans 1:20 the message is already there......it’s in the art.
